Hi, I’m Kim Exshaw—the Maker behind E X S H A W
E X S H A W is my surname, and the name of the work I want to build slowly and stand behind.
I make small-batch, hand-dyed indigo bags from my log cabin studio in northern British Columbia. Each bag is made distinctive through pieced quilt blocks, varying shades of indigo, denim, canvas, ticking fabric, genuine leather, block stamping and hand quilting.
The bag is the focus.
Companion pouches and bandanas may be made alongside the bags, but everything belongs to the same family: useful indigo goods designed to be carried, used and worn in over time.
Hand-dyeing with indigo creates shades that vary from one piece to the next. The stamped marks are never perfectly uniform. That is part of what makes each piece individual and beautiful. I love pieces that show where a hand has been—it gives each one a story.
Leather bottoms and straps add strength and structure. Hand quilting adds texture. Traditional pieced quilt blocks give each bag its character.
E X S H A W is a focused body of work, built gradually and made in small numbers for people who want something useful, distinctive and lasting.
